Mercury, the planet of communication goes direct tomorrow,
Tuesday, August 16. Mercury has been retrograde in Leo, which

The Red Planet is about to be spectacular! This month and next, Earth
is catching up with Mars in an encounter that will culminate in the
closest approach between the two planets in recorded hist. The
next time Mars may come this close is in 2287. Due to the way
Jupiter's gravity tugs on Mars and perturbs its orbit, astronomers
can only be certain that Mars has not come this close to Earth in the
Last 5,000 years, but it may be as long as 60,000 years before it
happens again.

The encounter will culminate on August 27th when Mars comes to within
34,649,589 miles of Earth and will be (next to the moon) the
brightest object in the night sky. It will attain a magnitude of -2.9
and will appear 25.11 arc seconds wide. At a modest 75-power
magnification, Mars will look as large as the full moon to the naked
eye. Mars will be easy to spot. At the beginning of August it will
rise in the east at 10p.m. and reach its azimuth at about 3 a.m..

By the end of August, when the two planets are closest, Mars will
rise at nightfall and reach its highest point in the sky at 12:30
a.m. That's pretty convenient to see something that no human being
has seen in recorded hist. So, mark your calendar at the beginning
of August to see Mars grow progressively brighter and brighter
throughout the month.

This is a big week this week with the summer solistice on Tuesday and a full moon in capricorn Wednesday. This would be a very good time to get rid of some personal burdens and solidify financial matters.

Weekly Consciousness Tune-Up

Delete, Delete!

The energy this week is supporting us to clean house internally. The best way to illustrate this concept is by observing the miracle of the human body. Whatever the body finds to be a threat or harmful, it gets rid of. If this threat is not removed, it will make the body sick.

The spiritual world is structured the same way. And if only our negativity would come out as waste, then we’d be in great shape!

But most of us don’t remove our “mental” garbage, and our relationships get sick as a result.

So how do we do this? The answer lies in grasping the difference between restriction and suppression.

What usually happens to us once we’ve stepped onto the spiritual path is we feel guilty when a reaction bubbles to the surface, so we stuff it back down. We have an issue with a friend, but we tell ourselves, ‘I’d better restrict.’ But what we really do is suppress the feeling. The anger or frustration or sadness doesn’t go away – it gets filed away.

We build up stacks of files on others but we never bother to delete them. And these files build up until finally they corrupt the relationship. You see, all these negative files take up space in our spiritual memory bank, space that could be filled with Light.

Every time we are confronted with this same person, our perception of them is clouded by the negative memory banks. There is no way to communicate with them from a place of Light, even if we would like to do so.

‘Restrict’ doesn’t mean laying blame upon others. Other people are not the cause for our pain and suffering. What it does mean is first allowing ourselves to feel the emotion. We are not made of wood after all, and getting to the point of being able to restrict a reaction even before it happens takes lots of practice.

So we first have to be honest with ourselves about what we feel. Our next step is to remember what we talk about often in the tune ups - we create every situation in our lives, whether through previous actions or words, in this incarnation or another. And it is through these uncomfortable opportunities that we transform the most.

It goes back to that timeless question – ‘Why is this happening to me? What is my lesson?’

A square of the Aries Sun and Saturn in Cancer started the dour day. You can get something done though. If the sun is shining where you live today, you're the exception, though you may be tired. A good day to rest.

Review and Preview:

By the time most of the world starts the work week on January 31, a new era of government will commence in the Iraq, and the start of a whole new direction for governing in the Middle East may start as well. Depending on your political bent, this will be viewed as either a great step forward for humankind, or a step backwards from which humanity will never recover.

No doubt this weekend’s election in Iraq will be viewed as an overwhelming success by the Conservatives, or Republicans in the United States. They know that the democracy, which they helped bring to this region, is the only form of government that will give human beings their God-given right to pursuit of freedom, liberty, and happiness. And that “gift” can only be attained when the people of a nation are given the right to a vote their collective will.

On the other hand, there is little doubt this weekend’s election in Iraq will be viewed as an overwhelming failure by the Liberals, or Democrats in the United States. They know that an election in which the candidates represent the special interests of the occupying nation ( United States), and not the true overall demographics of Iraq, is not really an illustration of pure democracy at work. They know that a government that is molded primarily to accept a favorable association with American businesses that will be the primary economic benefactors of the huge profits that the oil (and the education and rebuilding of the infrastructure) of that region will bring is not a true form of democracy at work. They know that an election that does not include the vote of all the major groups that represent Iraq is not a representative government.

And then there are the ever increasing number of insurgents, or terrorists, in Iraq, and what many of them may be thinking. For some (not all) who see this as a religious war, the next few days may represent a rare opportunity to sacrifice their lives in a cause against "The Great Satan" and lock in their place in the heavenly structure of Bin Laden and the Al Qaeda. If the reward in the afterlife is dependent upon how many of the infidels one can kill and infidels are defined as anyone who votes in this weekend’s elections, or serves the new government of the occupying devil, then what better time to achieve martyrdom than now? When will there ever be such a chance to huddle so many infidels together at one time than in this election weekend? The same may be said about many Sunnis who are not fighting a religious war, but simply want to remove the United States from Iraq. For them, this presents an unprecedented opportunity to annihilate so many enemies of one’s ideology at one time. And afterwards, when those who have been elected have been identified, they will have yet other opportunities to defeat those infidels who chose to serve “The Great Satan.”

This is the weekend that Mars conjuncts Pluto in Sagittarius. As stated last week, “ Mars-Pluto, to an astrologer, is a potentially very violent combination, especially in the fiery sign of Sagittarius. And we already see the escalation of violence leading up these elections, and in fact, they are getting worse by the day. Could a real large scale disaster occur, much worse than most leaders fear? It’s possible… we know that this is an incredibly dangerous time that Iraqis are asked to risk their lives and exercise their new freedom to vote.” The incredible build up of intensity and intimidation is indeed increasing as the Iraqi election nears, just as this aspect suggests it would. On late Thursday night’s MSNBC news, newscaster Alison Stewart reported 16 separate incidents alone that day in which killings of people, or explosions of buildings related to the election, took place. 16! And the election was still 4 days away.

Financial markets, just like the difference between conservatives and liberals, seemed torn between how the Iraqi elections will go. Most stock indices were weak early last week, and many managed to struggle back up towards the end of the week. The Netherlands and Australia’s all ordinaries managed to make new cycle highs during the day on Friday, but like most other indices, both also closed well off those highs. No market, except perhaps U.S. treasuries, could do too much last week. It is like investors are waiting to see exactly what the election results will be. They are waiting to see if there will be a massive massacre or not, and how the world will interpret the events. But I already mentioned how it will be interpreted. The conservative will declare this to be glorious day, a huge success, and a giant step forward for Humankind. It will be interpreted as a sign of God’s will, and it will be seen to support the moral authority of the parties involved. But the liberals will declare it a day of great mourning and a huge step backwards for Humanity. They will see it as another sign that the United States has once more forfeited its position of moral authority in the world, just as it did when it invaded Iraq on the false notion that Saddam had weapons of mass destruction, and furthermore when it detained thousands of people thought to have links with the September 11 attack without allowing them any legal rights whatsoever, followed by the incidents of prisoner abuses in the Iraqi prison by U.S. military. You will hear strong arguments of both these positions in the next week, with both sides refusing to budge from their ideological habits. This is the nature of Mars-Pluto conjunct in Sagittarius. “I am right, you are wrong. And for being on the wrong side, you must be destroyed.” The terrorists will destroy literally. The liberals and conservatives will do it figuratively, attacking one another’s character with as much mean spirit as any terrorist would.

Short-Term Outlook:

From a geocosmic point of view, this should be a very interesting week.

On Sunday, January 30, geocentric Mercury will move from the cautious sign of Capricorn into the more unconventional and freedom-loving sign of Aquarius through February 16. Venus will then do the same February 2-26. By itself, this will likely correspond with a more positive and hopeful outlook for investors. On Tuesday, Jupiter will turn retrograde, and six days later (February 7), the Sun will trine Jupiter. This too is a more optimistic and hopeful dynamic. Under the retrograde, however, we do not know whether the initial Jupiterian sense of exaggeration is towards the more positive or hysterical, but by the trine it likely to be more hopeful. Jupiter rules Sagittarius, and on Thursday and Friday the Moon will be in Sagittarius, and hence the “Sagittarian Factor” will be operative. This is a time of the month when price swings in financial markets tend to be more exaggerated than usual. Plus the Sun conjuncts Neptune on Thursday, which is a very powerful Level 1 signature. It has a 75% correlation to primary or greater cycles in U.S. stock indices within 9 trading days. On Friday, the very important employment reports come out, too. The combination of all of these factors implies that the focus of the markets on Iraq is probably going to shift this week to more economic concerns. The employment reports on Thursday, combined with corporations and individuals making contributions towards their retirement plans now, in order to defer taxes due for 2004, could propel the U.S, market sharply higher under these signatures in the next 2 weeks.

However, the Sagittarius factor on Thursday and Friday will also find the Moon crossing the Mars and Pluto transits that are also at the end of that sign. This indicates that the danger of terrorist activities is still present, and more explosions and threats to human life are present then.

Long-Term Thoughts:

We are still on the downside of the Saturn-Pluto cycle until 2020. The danger is still more debt, debt, and debt, just as this 16-20 year phase of the cycle has indicated so many times historically. And as President Bush promises to cut the federal deficit in half in the next five years, the White House announced last week that it will request $80 billion more for the war in Iraq. But it won’t count towards the budget deficit. Huh?

The next rally in U.S. stocks is due to begin shortly. And shortly afterwards, the 4-year cycle may top out, followed by the resumption of the bear market that could last for a good part of the rest of this decade. Perhaps there is no sense of panic, however, until after Jupiter completes its trine to Neptune. The third of these three passages is completed at the end of summer, 2005.

Bush's Second Inauguration

The Inauguration ritual, arguably the nation's biggest party, will cost some $40 million to stage, and features nine official inauguration balls, three candlelight dinners for big contributors, three official receptions, a huge parade, and the swearing in ceremony at noon, January 20. The festivities will be challenged by numerous protestors, while patrolled by an unprecedented number of security teams.

Astrologers often use the horoscope for the swearing in ceremony to interpret the President's term in office. The 2001 inauguration chart featured an angular Mars squaring Mercury and Uranus, which accurately foreshadowed the 9-11 incident and the invasion of Iraq. This time Ceres is in that same angular position, and squaring Neptune, describing grief-inducing events (see NewsScope December 14, 2004 for more on this chart).

Another prominent planet in the 2005 inauguration horoscope is Venus, which rules the Taurus Ascendant, and is extremely well-placed by being trine the Ascendant. Venus gains additional weight by being exactly opposite the U.S. Sun. Venus is in the corporate sign of Capricorn and is conjunct Mercury. Together they are the Gucci Gulch lobbyists who will influence the Bush domestic and foreign policies.

Then, Chiron is conjunct the Midheaven in this chart, and coincidentally, is also conjunct the U.S. Pluto. Chiron here represents the power of the U.S. across the global village, but most significantly, the military power*. Chiron is challenged by Saturn, and a square to the lunar node axis, indicating immediate and long-term security problems for American vested interests.

Saturn Hits Abbas' Mars-Pluto

Newly elected Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas was sworn in as President last Saturday, the day after Israel broke off all diplomatic contacts following a terrorist attack. Abbas is favored by the international community to rein in terrorism in order to lead a post-Arafat era along the roadmap to peace. Palestinian militants are determined to undermined the process.

Mahmoud Abbas was born with his Sun in the pioneering sign of Aries (March 26, 1935; Safed, Israel; time unknown), with his Mars in the diplomatic sign of Libra. Abbas asserts himself through diplomatic efforts, and became an international player as the architect of the Oslo Agreement. His Mars squares Pluto, so that he naturally negotiates with the most violent elements of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Abbas's Pluto is located in domestic Cancer and is conjunct the karmic South Node. His situation is similar to the Dalai Lama's (July 6, 1935), who also has Mars in Libra square Pluto and the South Node. Both are refugees from their birthplace, and both have assumed leadership roles between the occupying governments and their outcast constituents. Like the Dalai Lama, Abbas's chief objective is the right of return.

At the moment, transiting Saturn is conjunct Abbas's Pluto, as he is now appointing the critical security forces which may or may not control the Palestinian militants. Saturn is currently retrograde, but turns direct in two months while squaring his Mars. This celestial condition is going to be extremely difficult for him to manage, and the concerned astrologer might also be anxious about his personal safety.

Prince Harry's Faux Pas

On January 8, young Prince Harry was photographed wearing a Nazi uniform at a costume party. The incriminating picture made the front pages of the British tabloids, and went on to create an international outcry over his insensitivity and ignorance. His critics are now saying he's not even fit to join the military, and many are questioning the quaint institution of royalty itself.

Upon first glance at Prince Harry's horoscope (September 15, 1984; 4:20 pm; Lon don), one notices an abundance of factors pointing to common sense. His Sun in duty-conscious Virgo along with other earth planets tunes him to the practical side of life. Capricorn Rising has its business-like approach, and with his ruling planet Saturn near his Midheaven, this chart is heavy with the burden of position.

However, with his Sun square Neptune, Harry has become an escape artist. This configuration gives a tendency to fantasize, and relax with illegal substances ( Neptune is in the TwelfthHhouse of secret activity). Poor mental judgment is reflected in his Mercury, which squares impulsive Uranus. Mercury-Uranus aspects are impatient with formalities and protocol, and put a premium on freedom of expression.

At the time of his indiscretion, transiting Pluto was entering his Twelfth House of subconscious motivations, and was exactly squaring his Sun, giving him an urge toward absolute domination. Being third in line for the monarchy makes him low on the totem pole, so his only outlet was fantasy, and a dark one at that. Now transiting Saturn is forming a hard aspect to his natal Uranus (a trioctile or 135-degree aspect), which will likely have the effect of taming his wild side.

*Chiron as symbol for the military is derived from its position in the Sixth House of military services in the U.S. Scorpio Rising horoscope, and in the Pentagon's chart Chiron is rising while precisely square the Leo Sun.

Review:

Last week’s column warned about the difficulties that awaited investors ahead of the Iraqi elections as follows, “With heliocentric Mercury moving into the ‘let-it-all-out’ sign of Sagittarius next week, these price swings are likely to expand. This can be a signature not just of concern, but maybe even a little hysteria. In more cases than not, precious metals and currencies soar and stock prices fall hard during the first 4-9 days of this ingress. And if indeed hysteria starts to set in about the dangers of the impending Iraqi elections, these moves could continue right into January 28-31, our next three-star critical reversal period, the Iraqi elections, and the dangerous Mars-Pluto conjunction.” Stock markets did fall all week. And so did precious metals and currencies, until Friday, when they suddenly reversed sharply back up. Precious metals made new highs for their new cycle on Friday.

In Europe, most indices tried to make new highs for the year early in the week, but failed, and then sold off somewhat sharply into the end of the week. The only exception was the Netherlands AEX index, which actually made a new 9-month high at 355.90 last Tuesday and still closed relatively strong at 353.60. But new highs failed on the early-week rallies in the DAX, FTSE, and Swiss indices, creating a case of intermarket bearish divergence.

In the Pacific Rim, Australia’s All Ordinaries index made yet another new all-time high on Monday, January 18, at 4094.80. But then a sell off ensued through the end of the week, closing at 4046.40, below the important 25-day moving average for the first time in a long time. Both the Hang Seng of Hong Kong and Nikkei stock index of Japan were weak after temporary highs last Monday (in the Nikkei), and appear headed for lower prices yet this coming week. However, both may be close to primary cycle troughs too, and ready to issue important buy signals (especially the Nikkei).

In the U.S., both the Dow Jones Industrial Average and NASDAQ Composite fell hard, closing near their lows of the week at 10,393 and 2034.30 respectively. This is down considerably from the multi-year highs posted on the first trading day of the year, around 10,868 in the DJIA and 2196 in the Composite. I don’t think we’ve seen the lows yet. The same holds true with the Argentina Merval Index, which was relatively quiet last week, trading between the recent multi-year high of 1408 on December 20, and the 1298 low of January 5.

Short-Term Outlook:

Heliocentric Mercury continues in Sagittarius until the end of this week. In fact, so does heliocentric Venus. But the most important signatures coming up are Venus-Saturn in opposition on January 27, and Mars-Pluto in conjunction on January 28. Venus-Saturn is a Level 1 type of signature, the strongest correlation to primary or greater cycles. Historically, this signature has a 71% correspondence to, primary cycles within 13 trading days. But the Mars-Pluto conjunction the very next day is also a Level 1 type, with a 78% correlation to primary or greater cycles within 12 trading days, and 65% within 9 days. These two signatures are present as we end the week, and prepare for the Iraqi elections to take place that Sunday. No doubt the world is tense as these elections take place, and with good reason. Mars-Pluto, to an astrologer, is a potentially very violent combination, especially in the fiery sign of Sagittarius. And we already see the continuing demonstrations of violence leading up these elections, and in fact, they are getting worse by the day. Could a real large scale disaster occur, much worse than most leaders fear? It’s possible. Will it occur? Who knows? Astrology only points out the conditions, describes the dynamics present, and does not guarantee the outcome. All we know is that this is an incredibly dangerous time that Iraqis are asked to risk their lives and exercise their new freedom to vote. It is apparent that an astrologer was not consulted about the choice of dates to hold this election. And that is yet another example of why I believe we will continue to struggle to find peace until we start including the voices of astrologers who understand the connection between the cosmos and cycles of humanity.

Once this week is over, a slew of more positive and hopeful signatures unfold into February. It is also the time when lots of money will pour into retirement accounts (legal tax shelters), which in turn will find their way into stock markets around the world. I expect huge rallies to begin shortly, lasting through much of February and maybe even into March. But with Mars in Sagittarius and Capricorn through March 21, I don’t expect much lessening of violence in the Middle East, despite the election in Iraq. Mars in Sagittarius and Capricorn is historically a period of great unrest in that region, and especially vulnerable (and active) is usually Israel.

Long-Term Thoughts:

Did anyone watch the interview of Newt Gingrich on FOX network Wednesday night? With great pride and confident anticipation of the future, Gingrich pointed out that this past USA election was the first time in 76 years that the majority of voters put into office a Republican president and a Republican controlled Senate and House of Representatives. The underlying assumption was that this bodes well for America, and the world, because the Republican (conservative) party finally controls the legislative and executive branches of the government.

Let’s see… 76 years ago. That would be the term of 1929-1933. Let’s hope that history does not repeat itself. But alas, that was also the last time the Saturn-Uranus-Pluto formed a T-square to one another in the heavens. And that same configuration returns again 2008-2010. Once again we are headed towards a “Cardinal Climax.” Everything we are doing now is being pulled like a magnet to the climax of this forthcoming period. Saturn-Uranus-Pluto are now in a Yod formation with one another, alternating between sesquiquadrate and quincunx aspects through summer 2006, with Saturn traversing the midpoint of Uranus and Pluto. It is like being between a rock and a hard place. There is a frustration that things are not working out, and an ominous sense that something has to be done. But no one really knows exactly what to do. Nevertheless, the sense that something must be changed propels our leaders into action, to force something to change, because they have become convinced that things can’t stay the same and work. And the consequences of those decisions will likely come to fruition in 2008-2010… and may very well require more drastic measures… just like they did 76 years earlier when these same planets started moving towards a similar configuration.

We do have a choice. History via astrology teaches us that this is the time of the cycle to save save, save. Or invest in oneself. It is not a favorable time to increase one’s personal or national debt. But where do you save? In the United States? Which countries will be least vulnerable to a surprise devaluation, or default? The answer is: countries whose leaders are building surpluses, not run-away deficits. If George W. Bush is able to honor his promise to half the U.S. deficit in the next five years, then the U.S. will be a great place to hold your money. If you believe his actions will match his words, then stay with America. If not, then you better start looking for places and ways to diversify your portfolio through a broader base of non-dollar backed assets. Unfortunately, astrology cannot answer this question for you. It can only point out the themes that were present in the past, and as you can see, the same themes and conditions seem to be arising again. But the choices we make—our leaders make—can be different, and can thus yield a different outcome. The Republicans control the White House, House of Representatives and the Senate for the first time since the Great Depression of 1929-1933. Let’s hope they can get it right this time. After all, Jupiter is in trine to Neptune through August. Hoping and praying are considered favorable activities to engage in during this passage.

A bit depressing, unless we're focused on a goal.

Last nights Moon/Jupiter/Neptune Grand Trine (air signs=intellignece) continues through the morning, a time of harmony in our ways of thinking, and we can see the big picture now.

Great for plan making. Enjoy the sublte influence of this aspect, it should show up as nice weather, for most. Nature gets' 'replenished' under the influence as well.

Then, the fickle Gemini Moon opposes feisty Mars in opinionated Sagittarius, so its time to compromise, and see both sides now. A high tension aspect, but something needs to be spoken, and will.

Week of January 17

This week’s report is coming out early (Thursday evening) because I am taking a short holiday vacation to Mexico. Therefore I will not discuss how the markets closed the week ending January 14. But I will discuss the geocosmic picture ahead for the next two weeks, for the relevant issues as I see it, and how they might affect various financial markets.

Review of the Week and Preview of Things to Come:

This week’s column is going to be a little scary. Some might say I am engaging in needless fear-mongering. But read these thoughts, and think if there might be some truth in them. And then think about the fact that you – we – have some choices in the ultimate outcome, and what those choices might be.

Imagine yourself investing in your country’s Treasury Bonds, as a way to help your country out of great financial debt, and also to lock in a very good rate of return through the high interest yields. Then imagine waking up one morning to hear your political and economic leaders announce that your currency has been devalued by two-thirds. Your savings are now worth 1/3 of what they used to be worth. The value of your house is worth 1/3, but your mortgage payment stays the same.

And now imagine that those Treasury Bonds you purchased at the very good yield are defaulted upon by that very same government that devalued your currency. Instead of getting the high yield and all the face value back, that government wants you to accept 20 cents on the dollar for it. If you lived in Argentina the past three years, this is what you are experiencing today. In Tuesday’s Wall Street Journal, one of the front page headlines stated, “ Argentina is set to begin a debt-restructuring plan it hopes will resolve the largest sovereign default in history. The country will offer to pay only 30 cents on the dollar to holders of $103 billion in bonds.”

So the government offers to raise their repayment to 30 cents on the dollar, and some countries (like Germany and Luxemburg) consider this a very bold and positive move, while others (like Italy) are very opposed. But one has to wonder: why is it that the very people who offered to help you out in your time of need are the one’s who have to now suffer from inability of that government’s leaders to reign in its fiscal mismanagement? In many parts of the free world, we think that the government leaders are elected for the purpose of serving their citizens. But in other parts of the world, it seems like the leaders of the world expect their citizens to serve them. If the government and economic leaders of Argentina really cared about their citizens, perhaps they would offer to take a 2/3 cut in their salaries to help their citizens through this mess, instead of insisting on cutting the repayment of the loans by the same amount to these very people who trusted them to handle their finances responsibly in the first place.

If you look at the horoscope of Argentina (July 9, 1816, according to Nick Campion’s Book of World Horoscopes), you will see natal Neptune at 20 Sagittarius, square natal Pluto at 24 Pisces. And today, transiting Pluto is conjunct that Neptune and square that Pluto. As discussed so many times in this column, Pluto has to do with issues of debt. Argentina is a good example of a country going through a major debt crisis right now, brought about by horrendous fiscal mismanagement, financial favoritism to select individuals and companies, and wasteful overspending by its economic and political leaders in the past 20 years.

I bring this up, because Argentina may serve as an example of the dangers that lie ahead for other sovereign nations whose leaders may very well be embarking upon a similar path of horrendous financial mismanagement, financial favoritism to select individuals and companies, and wasteful overspending. One day you may wake up and find that your country’s currency has been devalued to a third of what it was the day before. And the only people who knew about, and could protect themselves, were the political and economic leaders who made the decision.

Does this sound scary and far fetched? Well, yes it is scary. But as you can see, it is happening today in one part of the world, a part of the world where some very intelligent and sophisticated people live. And with Saturn-Pluto in the downside of its cycle (2002-2020) and Saturn-Pluto-Uranus coming up to a T-square in 2008-2012 for the first time since 1930-1931, other countries whose leaders are acting in similar fashion may be putting themselves into the same vulnerable position as Argentina finds itself today. This is the part of the cycle that historically has coincided with increasing debt, debt, and more debt. And to counteract that, you need to save, save and save some more, and diversify to other currencies as well. This is not a climate for long-term investment, except in yourself.

Now imagine yourself living in Iraq and knowing a little bit about astrology. You have an election coming up on January 30, your country’s first free election since ???? But you look at the ephemeris for that period of time and you notice Mars conjunct Pluto in Sagittarius. Mars, the planet of anger and war; Pluto the planet with a correspondence to threat of human life and terrorism; Sagittarius, the sign with a “no holds barred, let-it-all-out,” mentality. And here you are, about to go vote in a country where insurgents are killing as many supporters of democracy and free elections as they can find every day, and your government (and my government) want you to go to a voting area and vote with thousands of others who are seen as the enemy of these terrorists, on this day, under this huge potentially dangerous aspect. It may be like volunteering to be a fish in a fish bowl where others are pointing rifles at you. We can only hope that the people of Iraq who have the courage to vote on that day, under those aspects, are adequately protected. With that aspect, in that type of political climate, the potential for large scale disaster is real. And please, don’t for one moment think that I am against the White House’s position for the Iraqis to hold their own elections, or that I am sympathetic for the terrorists. I am not. They are the enemy, and in my view, they will be the cause of any mass violence that might occur. But I am hopeful that the U.S. Government does not just gives lip service that it takes this danger seriously, but understands that it is putting these brave souls directly in harm’s way and will do everything possible to protect them.

As you think about these current and forthcoming scenarios, you can perhaps appreciate what these people are going through. And maybe you can begin to get an idea why equity markets are having a difficult time these past two weeks, and why Gold and Silver are starting to rally again. With heliocentric Mercury moving into the “let-it-all-out” sign of Sagittarius next week, these price swings are likely to expand. This can be a signature not just of concern, but maybe even a little hysteria. In more cases than not, precious metals and currencies soar and stock prices fall hard during the first 4-9 days of this ingress. And if indeed hysteria starts to set in about the dangers of the impending Iraqi elections, these moves could continue right into January 28-31, our next three-start critical reversal period, the Iraqi elections, and the dangerous Mars-Pluto conjunction.

The good news is that a slew of positive Jupiter aspects come forth in the first two weeks of February. If indeed equity markets fall into the end of this month, then a huge rally could follow into February and March as the focus shifts from politics to Americans investing into retirement accounts ahead of the tax deadline. The most dangerous period – where many Iraqis will be congregated in well defined voting areas - will then be behind us.

Another year gone by! What will the planets bring for us this coming year and how will we take advantage of it? Richard Giles, astrologer and Fen Shui expert, looks at some of the main trends that characterise 2005, to see what they'll bring for us to work with.

As we head through the divide between 2004/2005, the chart for the year set for midnight at Greenwich (UK) gives us a few insights. It has a Libran Ascendant which means justice, fairness, relationships and the restoration of social balance will be high priorities for the year. With the ruler of the ascendant, Venus, in tight conjunction to Pluto and Mercury in Sagittarius in the Third House (communications), we'll get huge debates and lots of mental and media focus on the rights of others, the return of justice to the social system and intense debate about how this could be done. The Capricorn Sun is in the 4th House, so issues of security and safety are still big in 2005.

Themes from the developments of the last few years continue. Uranus, ruler of radical change and the sign of the genius within continues to move through Pisces, the feminine water sign and Neptune continues its passage through Aquarius, the sign ruled by Uranus. The two share mutual receptivity in that they are in each other's signs; issues of water supply, pollution, technology, spirituality and new inventions continue apace.

Uranus reaches the second decan of Pisces for three months in mid 2005. Each thirty degree sign is divided into three sectors of 10 degrees called decans. The second decan of Pisces (being Water) is ruled by the Moon/Cancer, the soft and sensitive sign and both water supply issues, the role of mothering and national security continue to loom large.

Uranus at Sea

A prediction I made in 2003, writing on Uranus in Pisces, was that new communities will be built on and under the seas. In The Australian newspaper IT section of 16th November 2004, page 2, was a story titled "A City All At Sea" about plans for a Florida based project called 'Freedom Ship' which is 1.3 klms long and 25 stories high, planned to hold 40,000 people which will remain permanently at sea. It will have high-tech solar and wind power as well as an airstrip, an hospital, schools, commercial sites and landscaped gardens — Uranus in Pisces made manifest!

Two other outer planets, Saturn and Jupiter both change signs in 2005. Saturn moves into fiery and creative Leo in July and Jupiter moves into intense, transformative Scorpio in September. Chiron the healer moves to inventive Aquarius in February and as it changes signs there will be positive indications of health reform especially in natural alternatives and big change in fields of technology and the human rights reform of society.

Chiron Makes His Move

It's February 2005 that Chiron makes its first move into Aquarius in 50 years. Aquarius is the sign of humanity, new inventions, electricity, aviation, trade unions, the UN, computers, science, technology, astrology and reform movements. We may begin to see the application of Chironic (innovative) principles in these areas and while corruption in the trade unions, the computer industry and the UN may be become more visible, I suspect we will also see dramatic changes in aviation and air travel, the way we use and operate computers and the electrical supply industries around the world. Astrology is likely to become more mainstream as well.

Chiron briefly moves back into Capricorn from August until December 2005, then goes into Aquarius for the next five years. These will be dramatic times of reform and tremendous change in fields of technology, computers and science and the reform of society with human rights becoming irresistible so as to unseat current dictators and other non-democratic regimes.

Who is in Control?

Saturn is the planet of control and structures, as well as wisdom and maturity. With Saturn's shift into Leo, the demands for personal freedoms, restructuring of old political systems and the right to be one's own person, increase. In particular, government practices and corporate mores are under siege. Of special interest is the Pluto in Leo pivotal generation born between late 1938 and 1958 who are now aged between 46 and 65. Numbers of them are in positions of power and influence in all fields of human endeavour. Many members of this generation will go through big personal shifts in relation to personal power and life purpose. Structures may crash around them to reveal new ways of being alive with that Leo creativity abounding. Much depends on their personal charts, of course.

As Jupiter moves into the deeper Pluto-ruled sign of Scorpio we'll feel the need to expand ourselves into the realms of a personal imperative to find some significant meaning in life.

Mars in the Soil

Another event of considerable astrological importance this year is that Mars (the action planet) moves into Taurus, an Earth sign, in late July and, due to retrograde (backwards) motion from October to December, spends over 6 months in the earthy sign of soils and smells of the land. Taurus rules money, values, livestock, agriculture, farming and property. Big arguments about agricultural practices, genetic engineering, the money system and the state of the Earth's ecosystem will be the focus of much anguish and perhaps even direct action or violence at times.

Decisive community moves will be made to change things. To add to this upheaval, Jupiter in intense Scorpio squares Saturn in Leo at the end of the year. The last time of a major Jupiter/Saturn square was the 1986 explosion at Chernobyl and the subsequent nuclear fallout. Then too, Jupiter was in Water and Saturn in a Fire sign.

Technological Ingenuity

However, Jupiter does trine Uranus in Pisces in November '05 and May '06 and I feel it will be an exciting time of opportunity, technological invention and breakthrough. The pace of technological ingenuity will increase, people will feel they can understand and grasp life in an expansive new way and assistance is there to make big shifts in your spiritual and educational life.

At the same time Jupiter has been trining Neptune in Aquarius (Nov '04, March & Aug '05). All of this momentum means large parts of the human race will pine for a higher purpose and meaning to it all. The terrible machinations of fear, terrorism and war being pushed by both sides of the 'clash of civilisations' conflict will lose its appeal to millions on the planet. We'll get sick of the whole ridiculous fight and demand peace and religious freedom to be ourselves once more.

Eclipses in 2005

Four eclipses happen in 2005. The first are in April 8th (Solar) and 24th (Lunar). The second one is directly opposite the Lunar eclipse point of 28th October last year. The most interesting two are the Solar eclipse on 3rd October and the Lunar one of 17th October with the Sun in Libra. The first squares Australia's national Capricorn Sun exactly (we were born as a nation on 1st January 1901) and the second conjuncts our progressed Sun (our evolving nationhood). Those six months onwards from October 2005 will see some very big challenging shifts in Australia's identity and national development. There'll be a lot of soul-searching about our international and national roles.

Quickly looking at the Mayan calendar some interesting predictions arise that shed more light on 2005. Mayans count in Cycles of Nine with day and night themes for each year. 2004 was considered the Third Night in a nine year cycle. So 2005 will be known as the Fourth Day, and 2006 will be the Fourth Night. As the Fourth Day, its a period of development of light. The year's tap root grows deep to firmly attach itself while the trunk thickens and branches form. Its a period of expansion of any foundations laid.

The year 2005 ahead promises great breakthroughs and big changes in people's aspirations. Be ready for it.....!

FOOTNOTE: Having written a lot of columns on the Years Ahead each year, and with the awful stuff going on in the world that we have day to day (and now giant tsunamis), with fear, wars, bombings and what-not, I decided to concentrate on the better side of this year's transits rather than doing the same old warning stuff...
However, for those who do want warnings, the later part of 2005 is going to be very difficult.

As Saturn passes into Leo, Mars retrograding into Taurus and with Neptune in Aquarius and Jupiter into Scorpio, the last three months of the year promise a really difficult set of transits. As the year finishes we have

The last two months look rough and critical. This month's New Moon occurs in Capricorn, on January 10, 2005. Capricorn is the astrological sign that can easily see the "big picture", and because of this exceptional ability is able to stay focused on long-term goals. The Moon changes signs just a bit more than every two days. However, when the Moon is exactly conjunct the Sun (sharing its astrological degree), it is no longer visible in the sky and at this point in the lunar cycle it is called a "New Moon". This occurs once every month (in rare instances, twice) and marks the beginning of a new monthly astrological cycle.

The new moon signifies a start of a new personal cycle each month. It's a time to renew or revise our goals, reach for what we wish for most and renew ourselves. When setting goals or aspiring towards our dreams and desires it is important to keep a few things in mind. First of all, our wishes can only involve ourselves. We cannot try to change others, only our attitudes towards those people, in hopes that they will respond favorably to us. Another important aspect of this process is to meditate on the qualities of the sign that the new moon is occurring in. These astrological qualities will give us powerful hints on what to strive for, and how to approach or strategize towards what we want to accomplish. It is a good idea to set approximately 10 goals or wishes each month. Jan Spiller in New Moon Astrology also suggests that you do not combine several wishes into one wish! Keep your thoughts clear and separate, and write them down each month. I recommend a special notebook or journal exclusively used for this purpose.

Visualize Your Wishes

It is often best not to include a wish unless you can clearly visualize it coming into fruition within your imagination. If not, there may be preliminary steps you need to take first, so instead, try visualizing these. Trust your feelings and intuition in this process- you will know instinctively what feels right. Some wishes become realized soon after the new moon. Others are more resistant and can take many months. Keep repeating wishes each month until they begin coming true as long as you continue to believe that they are right for you. When things in your life such as people, events, and your own attitudes begin to "shift", welcome this new change as evidence that your life is changing as a result of your positive intentions. Each month I will share my reflections on the new moon based on the sign it moves into to help you in your own process. Using the New Moon in such a way is what I call Astrology in action!

Climbing the Mountain

On January 10, 2005 the new moon will be in the sign of Capricorn. This will happen at exactly 7:04 am eastern standard time.

Capricorn is one of the four cardinal zodiac signs, the others being Aries, Cancer and Libra. I think of the cardinal signs as a kind of cosmic "skeleton", providing an essential spiritual structure to each person's chart. Like a real skeleton each of these signs form an anchor within a person's life. The first cardinal sign, Aries, starts with the sense of affirming the ego or life force within us; of one's right to exist and be oneself. Cancer, natural ruler of the fourth house, deals with a person's emotional security and feelings of being nurtured and safe. Libra, which is the natural ruler of the seventh house explores a person's ability to establish and maintain balanced yet meaningful relationships with others, and Capricorn, the natural ruler of the mid-heaven or tenth house, with the ability to interact with and find a place within the world or society at large. Capricorn has a pretty major task to play as an influence in each of our charts, and at the time of it's new moon we have a wonderful opportunity to learn about how to set and reach realistic goals for ourselves, goals which describe how we envision our interaction within the world. With this in mind I feel inspired to discuss with my readers a little bit about the process of setting goals.

The Big Picture

Capricorn is the astrological sign that can easily see the "big picture", and because of this exceptional ability is able to stay focused on long-term goals.

Before setting long-term goals, it's good to try and see the big picture of your life. There is no sense setting totally unrealistic personal goals. It is also a good idea not to have too many goals at once. What we want is the possibility of achieving something that is meaningful as well as achievable for us. Try to take stock of what your abilities and interests are as well as any realistic constraints that you may face. Also take stock of your greater potential, and weaknesses that can be overcome. Overcoming a weakness can become a goal within itself.

Your Dreams are a Starting Point

If you do have lofty goals or wonderfully inspiring dreams (which may or may not be unrealistic), see these as an inspiration that you are giving to yourself. These dreams may provide you with useful information about yourself and they serve as a starting point. Your dreams, though perhaps far-fetched, can serve the purpose of pointing you in a wonderful new direction! Don't be afraid to dream when thinking of the big picture. For example, you may dream of becoming the President of the United States, but may instead actually run for local political office... or president of the school board. Some people benefit from remembering dreams they had about themselves when they were a child. See your dreams as the beginning step in your goal-setting journey.

Under the influence of the past new moon in Sagittarius, we had a good taste of this. Let your imagination and your feelings give you suggestions on which direction your soul is calling you to fulfill. This can apply to your personal as well as career ambitions. Once you have a direction (or even a few directions) start to formulate some long-term goals that are achievable. These goals, while resonating strongly with your dreams, are at the same time "do-able!

Each Goal Is A Mountain Top

I like to think (in Capricornian terms) of each long-term goal as a personal mountain that each of us decides to climb. Capricorn is symbolized as the Mountain Goat. This creature very carefully climbs up the mountain until he or she reaches it's summit. This goat knows where it's headed (in this case the mountain top) and never takes it's eyes off of the goal. Capricorn doesn't run uphill in blind enthusiasm (that's OK for Aries). This creature doesn't stay still and find a comfortable niche nestled in the hills and stop climbing, as would Taurus. This creature doesn't jump playfully from mountain to mountain (leave that trick to Gemini). Our goat doesn't even stop on the mountainside to count all the little blades of grass (leave that detailed task to Virgo)! Capricorn takes slow and steady steps up the mountain until his or her goal is achieved. There may be all kinds of setbacks along the way, but Capricorn wins it's objective of climbing to the mountain-top out of sheer hard work, patience, unwavering focus, and persistence. Capricorn wins every race among all the astrological signs even though it's the slowest (and least understood) one.

Breaking Down Goals Into Steps Helps You Stay On Track

For me the hardest part about setting long-term goals is breaking them down into small steps, or short-term goals. Sometimes it's helpful to make lists. The first list may consist of a few long-term goals, ones that can take several years to accomplish. What could follow this are the short-term goals or the smaller steps needed, all of which reflect back to the original long-term goals. Breaking things down in this way can really help you to stay on track, but it takes some work on your part. The other very challenging part is figuring out what you need to know about your goal in order to set effective short-term goals. It may be important to seek out mentors or information to help you understand all angles and possibilities of a possible new direction in your life that you want to explore. Only when you have specific information can you really establish goals that you can focus on.

Saturn—The Reality Tester

Consider the ruler of Capricorn—Saturn. Saturn is considered a tough taskmaster to many, but actually this planet is only a reality tester. Saturn requires that your actions and plans endure the test of actually trying them out in the real world. These plans or actions may take a long time to achieve, but once they do, your success will be greater than you ever imagined and your results will endure! These results come about through a commitment to hard work and practical application of your efforts. Even very lofty goals can be achieved this way, through slow but steady progress, proceeding one step at a time. The main idea is to decide on a goal and stick to it (that's often the difficult part), and each day perform at least one constructive action towards that goal. Believe it or not, without the influence of Capricorn nothing would ever be accomplished in this world!

Think of it as a business meeting that's destined to make both parties famous, successful and oh, so rich.
